Ease of Use Overall QGIS was actually very easy to use and looked like a standard Java application running on the Mac. Although there are not really any analysis plugins, I found that the plugin manager worked very nicely and that it allowed the user to easily add and remove functions. Moreover, adding data and changing symbology was as easy and straightforward as one would expect from a competent GIS program. Moreover, QGIS even has documentation (installation and user guide) that are available for download and clearly and concisely written. Analysis Challenge Unfortunately, QGIS failed the analysis challenge with great speed.

In terms of soaring, QGIS has the potential to perform a great deal of analysis on both vector and raster data. Unfortunately, in terms of actually being able to easily perform the analysis is where QGIS falls down, because hardly any analysis functions are built into QGIS. Specifically, QGIS has a plugin manager that allows you to load and use plugins to perform various different functions such as add data from a GPS, Georeferencing data, and even modeling biodiversity. Where the problem lies is that there are not really any analysis plugins and thus conducting analysis is difficult to say the least. While there is a buffer tool it would not work with shapefiles natively and required that shapefiles be imported into Post GIS format, which I couldn’t get to work correctly. Thus, overall there is great potential to perform analysis with the creation of plugins, but as of now there are not many analysis plugins for QGIS.

While I could not find anyway to geocode address data with uDig I did see a screenshot on their webpage which looked like it had the capability. Importantly, I tried to find a plugin for it but could not find a geocoding plugin for the Mac. In terms of standard GIS navigation functions uDig doesn’t appear to have as many of the normal features that the others had. In particular the basic GIS functions it had are as follows: • Zoom Control: Zoom in and out and full extent.• Identify tool• Interactive selection tool• Move map button Noticeably missing from this list is an open table button, measure tool, and pointer tool.

As stated in the major features section, the tools necessary to perform the analysis are not present at the current time, or at least in a manner in which I could find them and put them to use. Overall Results Overall I found the QGIS software to be a software system that holds great promise, but that right now is still in its infancy. As of now it is probably best used as a viewer of different data formats (which it does quite well) and not as much as an analysis machine. However as stated before, the potential is there for this to be a very powerful analysis tool as more plugins are created.

Overall Results Overall, I found the My World GIS software to be quite a nice little package, particularly for its stated market, education. While no where near as full featured as ArcGIS or many other full GIS systems, My World provided a nice package of ease of use, solid analysis features, and good cost.

The four different categories looked at are as follows: • Basic Information: Cost, software, main market.• Major Features: What are the main features of the system.• Ease of Use/Sophistication: Subjective determination of how easy the software is to use, is it intuitive? Confusing, etc.• Analysis Challenge: A review of the ability of each system to complete a simple set of analysis functions. (Add a shapefile, query the data, create a buffer around the queried data and export it as a shapefile) The different GIS systems reviewed were: • • • (User Friendly Desktop Internet GIS)• Importantly, there are four other GIS systems that will be reviewed in the second part of the review to be posted at a later date.

And a closer look at a large mine near Lamont, KY. The final maps show the mines as digitized polygons highlighting the amount of area taken up by the mines. This is the Skytruth_Mines_Merge layer. An owner of a golf course is working on redeveloping his golf course and has hired an analyst to help with the process. To make the process more streamlined and efficient the analyst is using GIS to help identify and plan various aspects of his new project. As part of the project the analyst needs elevation data for the greens on the golf course. He wants to know the elevations of the greens so that he can determine the best way to add new approaches and shots.

UDig Basic Information UDig is another open source GIS system with a special emphasis on data that is on WMS and WFS servers and runs across multiple platforms such as Windows, Linux, and OSX. As with My World it to is a Java program, which as has been stated before, means that it misses out on some of the great Mac functionality of a natively written program. Moreover, as with QGIS, it to is free, meaning that if you have problems with it you can’t complain because the price is right. Major Features As with all of the software looked at so far, uDig allows users to add shapefiles, but also adds other data types such as PostGIS, WMS and WFS data, tabular data and raster data.

Add to this package the availability of canned curriculum and it should be fairly popular amongst the middle and high school set. While this won’t get me to drop my Windows machine, it could do in a pinch. Quantum GIS Basic Information Quantum GIS is an Open Source GIS system that runs on all manner of operating systems, from Windows to Unix to Linux and OSX. Because of its open source nature there is no real designated market, rather it appears to be aimed at creating a functional GIS system that works across platforms. Unlike My World, which is a Java program, QGIS was developed using Qt and C++ and thus misses some of the cool features, and look, of a program written natively for the Mac. One thing that can’t be beaten with QGIS is the price, which like most open source programs is free.

The distance value is used to specify a search radius for the Closest operation, which will select the nearest feature in the Contours layer and use it as the feature to be joined. The Closest operation is preferred over the Within Distance operation in this context because the Within Distance operation will find all matches and then randomly select a value where as the Closest operation will only find the nearest feature. Uncheck the discard unmatched features box. See Below for an image of the spatial join window. Finally, using the Layer Styles Window you can show the elevations of each of the points using the Item Labels. See below for the final image. Fracking has become a hot button topic among environmentalists and politicians over the past 10 years.

To add the live map as a basemap choose File > Add Live Map. The second map below show the areas known as Shale Plays, which are areas that have shale gas currently being harvested using fracking. The areas being harvested are dark red. Recently, fracking made the news when NASA released satellite imagery highlighting the growth in fracking in undeveloped areas around the country. Specifically, NASA highlighted the growth in nighttime lights in the North Dakota region, which is a relatively undeveloped part of the county.

Select to Add a point layer and then add points on top of the greens. See below for an example of the add points process. See below for an image of the full set of points. We can highlight the general elevations of in the area by showing color differences for the various elevations. Double-click on the contours layer in the Layer Stack to bring up the Layer Styles Window. Change the based on selection to Elevation. Add four categories by clicking on the + button four times.

To create a contour map choose Tool > Create Contours. Set the increment value to 5. In the case we want highly accurate elevation data so we will use a small increment.

As of September 24, 2018, Apple has released macOS High Sierra (version 10.14). ClueTrust is unaware of any problems with the current shipping version of Cartographica (1.4.8). All functionality tested is working and we have not experienced any issues with internal testing. In addition, we've created a new beta of LoadMyTracks that addresses some recent issues with some devices and versions of macOS.

However, as a rule, we caution against the use of pre-release operating systems for crucial work. Although we are unaware of any problems today that hamper the use of either Cartographica or CartoMobile, it is always possible to experience crashing and data loss with operating systems that have not been fully tested. With that said, if you choose to experiment with iOS 11 or macOS High Seirra and run into problems with our software, please don't hesitate to report the problem to us. We can't guarantee we will fix it during the beta period, but will work hard to have any compatibility issues resolved before the final release of the operating systems. After quite a long time in beta and development, ClueTrust is pleased to announce the release of, our iOS App for field data collection and use. There are a lot of changes in 1.4.4, probably quite a few more than would otherwise be indicated by the small bump in version numbers.

Zoom in to the Lower Left Corner of the Contours layer and look for High Point Golf Club. Once you find the golf course uncheck the contours layer. Choose Layer > New Layer and then Edit > Add Feature.

Please make sure that you are using the most recent versions of Cartographica (1.4.8) or LoadMyTracks before reporting a bug when running macOS High Sierra. In June, Apple announced pre-release availaibility of iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra (10.13). ClueTrust is working to verify complete compatibility with these versions prior to their release this fall.

ESRI ArcExplorer Basic Information The last, but not least, GIS software to be reviewed is from the 800 pound gorilla ESRI. As opposed to the other software reviewed thus far, ArcExplorer (AE) can best be termed a viewer rather than a full fledged GIS system. In fact when talking with the ESRI people they do not really consider that they have a GIS system for Macs only the ArcExplorer viewer. As for the specifics, AE is aimed at the education market, according to ESRI, and is given away for free. As with several other programs running on OSX, it is a Java program and not natively written to work on a Mac.

Do we understand enough about how occupants’ sensory systems react with the environment by which they are surrounded? Field olfactometer. McLean 2014 ‘Smellwalk NYC’ Photo ©2014 Brian Harkin While there are many specialized tools available for detecting and analyzing environmental odours (Henshaw 2013), these instruments do not ‘capture’ the subjective dimensions of smell as a ‘lived,’ embodied, or environmentally ‘situated’ experience.

Shale Gas is a type of natural gas found deep within shale rock formations. In 2000 shale gas provided only 1% of U.S. Natural gas production; by 2010 it was over 20% and the U.S. Government's predicts that by 2035 46% of the United States' natural gas supply will come from shale gas (Wikipedia, 2013). There is significant debate about whether fracking should be increased to these levels due to the environmental risks associated with the fracking process.

Dominating were land‐cover changes associated with the timber practices in the forested plains ecoregions and urbanization in the piedmont ecoregions. Appalachian ecoregions show the slowest rates of land‐cover change.

Cartographica is a Geographic Information System (GIS) for your Mac with which you can explore and refine data, create beautiful maps, export information for the web using Google Maps and Google Earth (via our KML Export capabilities). Merge data from several sources. Get local data from your government in CSV Latitude and Longitude (or in your state plane, Cartographica has a deep understanding of Coordinate Reference Systems), add to that with satellite or topographical information using Web Map Services such as Terraserver or NASA's Blue Earth, bring in street information from US Census Bureau TIGER, and see What's New in Cartographica.

After a lengthy development process and with the help of many fine testers, ClueTrust has released 2.0 of CartoMobile. Is now available on the App Store.

Considering that we are already 10.7+ only and there were few machines that were abandoned by 10.9 which could also run 10.7, it is likely that we will make this leap. If you have a strong feeling about this issue, please. We at ClueTrust integrated support for OpenStreetMap into both Cartographica and CartoMobile some time ago because it provides an avenue for public updating and curation that is unequaled and also provides data licensing that allows liberal reuse.

Ease of Use Overall the My World system was very easy to use, as one would expect from a system aimed at middle and hi8gh school kids. Adding data and performing analysis was all very straightforward and full of pop ups that tell you when you should be doing something. In addition there is a nice online help section which provides a complete discussion of each feature found in the software. While not anywhere as full featured as ArcGIS, it seems to hit the sweet spot in terms of basic analysis and viewing features while retaining ease of use. Analysis Challenge My World sailed through the basic analysis challenge, easily creating an attribute selection followed by a 1 mile buffer around the points and then allowing me to save both layers as shapefiles.

We are happy to see the wide range of outlined on the. There are lots of opportunities to improve the data set and make your mark on open data, while improving available map data for everyone. For those with little background with the organization, it didn't start in the US, but in Europe, where most Geospatial data was (at the time) locked up behind huge licensing restrictions. To combat this, founders and an army of interested people fanned out over the continent and later the globe to create map data which was free of those restrictions and open to the public.

It allows users to select many citations and add them manually. But the software works fine without any extra extensions and permissions. Some software requires specific files to export files from the database, such as. Review of endnote x8 for mac.

As of now it is probably best used as a viewer of different data formats with particular emphasis on wms and wfs data and not as much as an analysis machine. However as stated before, the potential is there for this to be a very powerful analysis tool as more plugins are created.

According to, ' Mountaintop removal is a relatively new type of coal mining that began in Appalachia in the 1970s as an extension of conventional strip mining techniques. Primarily, mountaintop removal is occurring in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. Coal companies in Appalachia are increasingly using this method because it allows for almost complete recovery of coal seams while reducing the number of workers required to a fraction of what conventional methods require.' Part of the problem with mountain top removal is that the processes is destructive to the environment and the local habitats in the area where the mining is occurring. ' Before mining can begin, all topsoil and vegetation must be removed. Because coal companies frequently are responding to short-term fluctuations in the price of coal, these trees are often not even used comercially in the rush to get the coal, but instead are burned or sometimes illegally dumped into valley fills' (iLoveMountains.org). Addittionally, ' While reclamation efforts such as stabilization and revegetation are required for mountaintop removal sites, in practice, state agencies that regulate mining are generous with granting waivers to coal companies.

Moreover, when it comes to purchasing computers for our labs, or my office for that matter, I always have to purchase Windows boxes in order to run ArcGIS. Yet, all is not lost for Mac lovers who need/want to perform real GIS analysis.

Despite the low levels of development there are significant nighttime lights visible in areas where shale gas fracking operations are underway. Image created by the (VIRUS). Once you download the image you can import it into Cartographica by choosing File > Import Raster Data. Below is an image showing the geo.tiff with the Shale Plays layer. In order to understand the magnitude, direction, and geographic distribution of land‐use changes, we evaluated land‐use trends in U.S. Counties during the latter half of the 20th century. Our paper synthesizes the dominant spatial and temporal trends in population, agriculture, and urbanized land uses, using a variety of data sources and an ecoregion classification as a frame of reference. A combination of increasing attractiveness of nonmetropolitan areas in the period 1970–2000, decreasing household size, and decreasing density of settlement has resulted in important trends in the patterns of developed land. Most sites receive little more than a spraying of exotic grass seed, but even the best reclamation provides no comfort to nearby families and communities whose drinking water supplies have been polluted and whose homes will be threatened by floods for the hundred or thousands of years it will require to re-grow a forest on the mined site' (iLoveMountains.org). The problem that iLoveMountains.org is attempting to combat is inherently a spatial problem, and due to this fact they disseminate a lot of interesting spatial data to help promote additional research and understanding by the public. To help highlight the problem that they are pointing out this blog post uses a number of the dataset provided to create maps and help visualize the problems. Before importing any of the data, first add a Live Map by choosing File > Add Live Map. This will provide a basemap and will allow you to see what the mountain top removal sites look like based on satellite imagery.
